1. What are the advantages of being a NICHE site?

    There are numerous advantages to having a NICHE program in your hospital. NICHE sites report improved patient outcomes, greater patient and nurse satisfaction, increased efficiency and marketability.

    As a designated site, your hospital will build the capacity to implement a system wide geriatric care program, participate in an extensvie collaborative community of practictioners, have access to the most up to date protocols and practices for care of older adults, and receive recognition and increase your value to the community.

  2. Who should become a NICHE site?

    Hospitals seeking to provide exemplary geriatric care, implement a geriatric care service line, or improve and broaden an existing geriatric care program.

    NICHE is an acute care program. Many hospitals and health systems have affiliated long-term care and community-based programs, that adapt some NICHE tools and resources, to meet their needs.

    Becoming a NICHE site begins with having a vision to provide exemplary care for older patients, support from hospital management, a desire to collaborate with experts and include clinical staff in a performance improvement program.

  4. What new features and resources will NICHE offer beginning in 2010?
    NICHE Knowledge Center

    The NICHE Knowledge Center contains all existing education and training tools PLUS a new E-Learning Center. The E-Learning Center includes interactive e-learning resources and a continuing education center to earn and track continuing education credits. The center is designed to provide flexible, 24/7 availability to help you engage and educate staff at their convenience.

    Educational Tools – Coming in 2010:
    • Additional gerontologic-specific modules that address specialty care, including oncologic and palliative care
    • Existing education and training tools in new, more interactive e-learning modules via the E-Learning Center - first launce The Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) Core Curriculum module
    • Continuing Ed center to award and track unlimited contact hours for conitinuing education credit and managment
    New Organizational Strategies - coming in 2010:
    • The NICHE - Magnet Alliance:  strategies to leverage both programs for designation or re-designation
    • Tools for making the business case through linking resources invested to impact
    • Strategies to engage the hospitalist/physician in improving the care of the hospitalized older adult

    NICHE Benchmarking

    NICHE sites will be able to participate in an initial and annual GIAP (a $3,800 savings). Sites can track their internal progress from year to year. 

    The revised and updated GIAP survey tool assesses new measures, including aging-specific outcomes and process measures to support root cause analysis.

    NICHE Community of Collaboration

    New discussion forums improve virtual collaboration, making it easier  to share best practices with colleagues and experts in geriatric care.  All content is archived, with advanced search and browsing tools to quickly locate what you need.

    NICHE Events

    The new NICHE program includes at least a 10% discount on annual conferences and educational symposia. The new design allows sites to realize savings of several thousands of dollars as sites now have the option to participate in the online Leadership Training Program, eliminating many of the travel expenses of the former annual Leadership Conference.

    NICHE sites also receive free the Webinar Learning Series and discounts on digital media recordings of webinars (link to typical usage pattern and savings *see below)

    Recognition Programs
    • Recognition in the American Journal of Nursing upon completing the annual recommitment survey
    • Watch for the new NICHE exemplar designation, which recognizes sites’ excellence and leadership in geriatric care.
